Let There Be Dragons, Fruit That Is!

Posted by Dr. Paul Grussenmeyer on

I am always looking for healthy things to try when I am away from my home base in New Jersey.  Just came back from the Gulf Coast of Florida where I tried Dragon Fruit for the first time.  Those in Central and South America know it as Pitaya.  It grows on a few species of climbing cactus.

Health benefits include aiding weight loss, improving digetion, lowering cholesterol, strengthening the immune system, boosting energy, helping prevent cancer and heart disease, helping thyroid functionand and carbohydrate metabolism, anti-microbial activities, speeding up wound healing, and cell regeneration .  It does this with its levels of Vitamins C, carotene, stimulating antioxidant activity, eliminating free radicals, B vitamins, fiber content, stimulating normal intestinal function and digestive juices, Omega-3 fatty acids, and some protein.  Since this one fruit has so much going for your health, it is considered a super food.

I just bought a couple which were slightly soft, cut them in half then scooped out the meat of the fruit with seeds and ate them in a salad.  Their taste was mild, so good to add to other raw dishes.

Can't wait to find some more exotic fruits and veggies to try!
