Cosmetic Dentistry

A crown is a permanent covering that fits over an original tooth which was decayed, damaged or cracked , or over an implant (artificial root replacement of a missing tooth).  They can also be used to change the cosmetic shape of deformed or rotated and malpositioned teeth.  Some patients call them “caps”.  Crowns are made of a variety of materials such as porcelains, metals, and resins.  We generally use porcelains for the best esthetics.  They have the most natural appearance.

After the procedure is completed, normal brushing and flossing must be done to keep bacteria away, just like you need to do with your natural teeth.

Avoid eating very hard items such as crunching ice, hard candies, very hard pretzels, etc.  These items can break your natural enamel, and porcelain on restored teeth.  Grinding and clenching is also bad for your natural teeth and restored teeth if done hard enough.  If you have that problem, a preventive appliance is needed for your crowns, natural teeth, muscles, and joints.
